Students are introduced to the concept of sustainability and a range of definitions used to characterise sustainable development. Resources, their beneficial utilisation and waste are discussed as drivers for sustainable development with particular reference to energy, finite natural materials, water, land and genetics.
Global scale environmental issues are introduced, such as climate change, ozone depletion, land degradation by contamination and over exploitation, and air and water pollution.
Students are introduced to models of sustainability and the issues associated with its measurement and characterisation.
