This course led by the Sustainability Research Institute provides high-quality interdisciplinary training on issues where the need for economic development and environmental conservation meet. It brings together academic expertise from the Schools of Earth and Environment and Politics and International Studies, and draws on specialist knowledge and experience of Sustainability from both practitioner and research communities. It also provides both theoretical and practical training in environment, development and sustainability. This course draws on theories in both the social and natural science disciplines and from practice and is therefore of relevance to candidates from a range of backgrounds.
It provides a large degree of flexibility with both compulsory and optional modules allowing students to tailor their programme according to their career aspirations.
A range of learning and teaching methods are used including lectures, practical workshops, field trips (UK and overseas), computer lab sessions, research seminars and project work. To complement teaching, assessment is varied and includes both written and oral assignments and exams.
Students have preferential access onto an optional overseas field course, which provides an opportunity for students to gain practical experience and apply classroom-based learning first hand in a developing country context - essential for anyone considering working in an international capacity in this field.
A period of extensive independent research is also conducted by students in the latter stages of the course. Students develop and implement a focused piece of research on a topic of their own choosing. Expert supervisory support is provided to students throughout the process. Collaborative links with environment and development institutions in the UK and/or overseas are facilitated and encouraged.
“The course opened me to an international world of knowledge where every opinion was gracefully taken. Every country mattered. The resources at the university are amazing and there is so much help and support for international students. All this has made my experience wonderful at the institution”.
