Geology for Engineers

Course Outline

This course will revisit geological issues of relevance to geotechnical design and analysis, e.g. what to expect from the interpretation of a geological map, how to put vertical profiles together and how to handle the Quaternary, ground water, vertical profiles, hills and valleys, assessment of geological risk, the geology for small jobs, and the sort of information the geological staff in the geological section of your company can and could provide.

This course will be followed by a field day based in Cheddar during which these and any others issues can be discussed in the field.

Who should attend

This course is designed for middle management engineers who would like to recalibrate their geological knowledge based on their industrial experience.

Course Presenters, day 1

Michael H. de Freitas Director of First Steps Ltd..and Emeritus Reader in Engineering Geology, Imperial College London. He holds degrees in Geology and has Chartered status with The Geological Society. Dr. de Freitas has much experience consulting in the geotechnical industry and has educated generations of engineering geologists.

Course Presenters, day 2 (Field day)

M. H. de Freitas and Christine Butenuth. Dr. Butenuth is also a director of First Steps Ltd., holds degrees in Geology and is a Chartered geologist with considerable experience teaching basic field skills to non-geologists.
