It is clear from recent international debate, not least the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (the ‘Earth’ summit) in Rio de Janeiro, that there is some danger of polarization between the two topics of environment and development. Richer northern countries may seem more concerned about environment and poorer southern ones about development, when enlightened concern about global human welfare must surely involve both. This diploma encourages you to consider the two topics together. It is a suitable qualification if you do not want to complete a full degree or if you want to obtain an interim qualification on your way to a full degree.
